Reframing Your Fear of Following Your Passion

Pursuing your passions can be scary, especially if you're thinking of leaving your day job to do so. I myself have faced a lot of hesitation before I decided to hand in my notice to leave the corporate world to pursue my dreams full-time.

These fear-based thoughts sounded like...

What if I can't make enough money to sustain my lifestyle?

What if I fail and disappoint myself and loved ones?

What if people judge me for this new path I'm choosing for myself instead of following what most people are doing?

And on and on.

Having these types of doubts is totally normal. I would probably question myself if I had no fears at all. When you choose to follow a different route, you will likely deal with a lot of feelings of uncertainty because everything is NEW. You haven't experienced it before and you're not sure where the path will lead you.

I'm going to share 3 things that have helped me navigate this uncertainty myself, with the hopes that it can help you too.

1. Learn to acknowledge your fear-based thoughts, question them and challenge them.

Try to identify the root of your fears by continuously asking yourself why? Are you afraid you won't make enough money? Why is this a fear for you - what will happen? Continue to ask why until you find out the real reason behind your fear and then come up with potential solutions.

You might also find talking out your fears with a trusted person can really help bring you comfort. I've found that sharing my worries with my partner has helped ease them a lot. He has helped me think through backup plans in case my craziest "what if" scenarios ever come true.

2. Remember your "why".

Remember why you're pursuing your passions in the first place. There must be a bigger reason. Maybe you want to leave a toxic work environment and use your talents to help others directly. Maybe you want to build new income streams to help you achieve financial freedom. Using your bigger purpose as a compass is a great way to help overcome some of these challenging thoughts. If you don't know what your why is yet, I'd strongly encourage you to start there.

3. Practice gratitude.

There are several scientifically proven benefits of practicing gratitude. One of those benefits is that it can help improve mental strength and resilience. Whenever I'm facing fear of uncertainty, I try to remember what I'm grateful for that relates to my current situation. For example, when I was fearful of pursuing my passion-fueled business full-time, I would think of all the amazing opportunities that have come along with it. More often than not, your mood will start to shift towards a more positive direction when reflecting on what you're grateful for.

Lastly, think of what life would look like for you if you were to not pursue any of your passions. How does that compare to the life that can be made possible if you were to try a different path and pursue what you really love. It's always worth a shot.
